Margate to Alcala La Real

Ash and I have been living in Alcala La Real for over one month now and we’re loving it..

Alcala La Real is a beautiful city in the province of Jaen in Andalucia, Spain. A province renowned for its olive groves, natural, rugged landscape and rich culture & history. Our place, Atelier88, is situated on Calle Real, a medieval street just a stones throw from the stunning Fortaleza de la Mota.

After living through some tumultuous times during our journey from Margate to Alcala La Real (including the car breaking down in Northern Spain and fun with the removals), I’m pleased to say we can now open our doors to guests at Atelier88.  It truly is a beautiful Casa Rural, recently established by Lottie and Pedro Nevin. It is somewhere that we came upon through a chance conversation with a neighbour in Margate. Next thing we know, Lottie was collecting us from Malaga Airport to show us around. We actually stayed the weekend, had a great time and the rest, as they say, is history…

This medieval Spanish townhouse was lovingly restored by Pedro & Lottie (as documented for all to see on Channel 4’s ‘A New Life In the Sun’). Whilst retaining an authentic look and feel the building has some quirky features that adds to its appeal. Atelier88 has recently been given the Fisher/Assaye treatment i.e. the injection of a whole load of ‘meaningful stuff’,  items of interest and furniture that has been carried over from our previous lives. We believe that this, together with a unique combination of Yorkshire and Guyanese hospitality and humour, makes Atelier88 THE place to stay in Alcala La Real.

You could say we’ve downsized a little. We’re focusing on just two amazing guests spaces rooms each having a beautiful private bathroom.  What used to be an art workshop (hence the name Atelier) has now become another space for guests to enjoy, a place to play and listen to old soul and jazz funk (vinyl of course), eat, drink, kick back and relax…

Plans are afoot to build a beautiful pool and expand into next door (Numero 90). Watch this space for future developments, it’s gonna be exciting…
